Balancing Remote Work

In today’s world, remote work is more than just a trend—it’s a lifestyle that offers flexibility, freedom, and unique opportunities to blend work and life in meaningful ways. But as anyone who works from home knows, this lifestyle doesn’t come without its own set of challenges.

One of the key advantages of remote work is the ability to enjoy the little things life has to offer. For me, these moments can be as simple as sharing a quick laugh with my grandkids or stepping outside to bask in the fresh air on my fabulous deck. These short, sweet breaks are a gift that make the long hours at the computer more bearable and enjoyable.

Remote work isn’t a traditional 9-to-5 job. For many of us, it’s more of a 24/7 gig. I often find myself working in the early morning hours—sometimes starting as early as 4 AM—and pushing through late evenings or weekends to meet deadlines. It’s a far cry from the days of punching a time card and having the weekends off with paid vacations, but it’s a trade-off I wouldn’t change for the world.

The freedom to set my own schedule means I can be productive in ways that suit my personal rhythm. While some days I may wish for a strict 9-to-5 routine, the flexibility of remote work allows me to find balance in other areas of my life. It’s about finding those moments to refresh, recharge, and take care of my mental health.

For anyone working remotely, it’s important to take those moments to step away from the screen, enjoy your surroundings, and connect with the things that matter most. Whether it's a walk outside, a cup of coffee on your porch, or a quick cuddle with loved ones, these small breaks make the long workdays more manageable and fulfilling.

In the end, remote work isn’t just a job—it’s a lifestyle. And while it may not be the traditional 9-to-5, it’s a trade-off I wouldn’t trade for anything. Here’s to making the most of life’s little moments while balancing the demands of working from home.

HTML/CSS Designers

Hey there! If you're looking to make your website stand out while ensuring it's accessible to everyone, you've come to the right place. At WebChick.com, we believe that having a website that's both unique and ADA-compliant is crucial. Let’s dive into why having skilled HTML/CSS designers on your team is a game-changer.

The Magic of HTML and CSS

First things first, let’s talk about HTML and CSS. These two are the bread and butter of web design. HTML, which stands for Hypertext Markup Language, structures your website, while CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, makes it look fabulous. Together, they allow designers to create websites that aren't just pretty but also functional and user-friendly.

Making Your Website ADA-Compliant

Ensuring your website is ADA-compliant means making it accessible to people with disabilities. This is super important! Custom HTML/CSS design lets us tweak every little detail to meet these standards. This includes things like adding alt text to images, making sure the site can be navigated with a keyboard, and ensuring text is readable. All these elements help create a seamless experience for all users.

Ditching the Templates

Sure, templates can be a quick fix, but they often lack the flexibility to give your site a unique flair. Custom HTML/CSS design, on the other hand, lets us get creative and precise. At WebChick.com, we live by the motto "if you look fresh, we look fresh." That's why we offer free website design revamps. We want your site to stay modern and relevant because when you shine, we shine too.

The Job Market Loves HTML Skills

If you're thinking about a career in web design, knowing HTML is a huge plus. It's the foundation of all web pages, and having this skill can set you apart from the crowd. Whether you’re building a simple landing page or a full-blown business website, HTML and CSS give you the tools you need to create something amazing.

Wrap-Up

So, why are HTML/CSS designers so important? They help create websites that are not only visually stunning but also accessible to everyone. At WebChick.com, we're passionate about delivering custom designs that enhance the user experience and keep your brand looking sharp. Remember, a fresh look for you means a fresh look for us.

Google's Mobile-First Indexing

Hey there, web enthusiasts! Big news from Google is coming our way. As of July 5, 2024, Google will stop indexing websites that aren't mobile-friendly. Yep, you heard that right! Google's making a big shift to prioritize mobile web usage, reflecting the increasing trend of people browsing on their phones.

What’s Changing?

Google is switching to using its Googlebot Mobile user agent, which acts like an Android phone when crawling sites. If your site blocks this user agent, Google won't be able to see your site, meaning it won't get indexed. This change is all about providing a better user experience because, let’s face it, more and more of us are using our phones to surf the web.

Why It Matters

Here's a fun fact: when people have trouble accessing information on a website, 61% are unlikely to return, and 40% might visit a competitor's site instead. That’s a lot of potential customers slipping through the cracks! Google’s move to mobile-first indexing is a reminder that having a mobile-friendly site isn’t just nice to have—it’s essential.

Checking Your Site's Mobile Friendliness

Even if you think your site is mobile-friendly, some platforms might give false positives. For a more accurate check, use Google's Mobile-Friendly Test. Additionally, running Lighthouse in Chrome DevTools can help you pinpoint any issues.

The Impact on Your SEO

Google’s shift to mobile-first indexing isn’t happening overnight but in stages. If your site isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re likely to see a drop in your search rankings. This means you could lose anywhere from 5-30% of leads simply because your site doesn’t play well with mobile devices. Ouch!

What You Can Do

  1. Responsive Design: Ensure your website design is responsive. This means it should adapt to different screen sizes and devices seamlessly.
  2. Optimize Your Content: Pay attention to title tags and meta data. Make sure they’re optimized for mobile viewing.
  3. Regular Testing: Keep checking your site’s mobile friendliness regularly. This helps you catch and fix issues before they impact your ranking.

Final Thoughts

Google’s move to mobile-first indexing highlights the importance of having a mobile-friendly website. If your site is outdated and not responsive, it’s time for a revamp. At WebChick.com, we specialize in creating custom, responsive designs that not only look great but also comply with all the latest SEO practices. Remember, a mobile-friendly site not only keeps you in Google’s good books but also ensures a better experience for your users.

Mental Health and Inspiration

Hey there, fellow web designers! At WebChick.com, we understand the hustle of managing 24/7 updates and delivering quality work within tight deadlines. But amidst all the hard work, it’s crucial to remember that taking breaks is essential for both our mental health and creative inspiration.

Time Management and a No-Stress Lifestyle

Balancing work and personal life is key to maintaining a no-stress lifestyle. In 2024, we've made significant changes to improve our work environment and overall health. Personally, I've managed to drop 20 pounds, adjusted our work schedules to better suit our needs, and spent more quality time with family. Life moves fast, and if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. (Thanks for the wisdom, Ferris Bueller!)

The Necessity of Breaks

Working long hours without breaks can lead to fatigue, loss of focus, and burnout. Breaks are vital as they allow our brains and bodies to recharge, improving our mood and energy levels. A balanced lifestyle also helps with creative rejuvenation, providing a fresh perspective and sparking new ideas.

How Often Should You Take Breaks?

Some experts recommend taking breaks every 25-30 minutes. Setting a timer can be a helpful reminder to step away from the screen. These short breaks can be used for stretching, walking, drinking water, or practicing mindfulness meditation.

Activities to Refresh and Reenergize

During your breaks, engage in activities that relax and refresh you:Stretching: Helps reduce muscle tension and improve circulation.

  • Walking: Clears the mind and boosts creativity.
  • Breathing Exercises: Reduces stress and enhances focus.
  • Mindfulness Meditation: Promotes relaxation and mental clarity.

Benefits of Taking Breaks

Incorporating regular breaks into your routine can:

  • Reduce Digital Fatigue: Less screen time helps prevent eye strain and mental exhaustion.
  • Improve Focus: Short breaks can enhance concentration and productivity.
  • Spark Creativity: Time away from work can inspire new ideas and innovative solutions.

Achieving Work-Life Balance

Maintaining a balanced lifestyle is essential for preventing creative blocks and ensuring sustained productivity. Here are some tips:

  • Break Down Projects: Divide tasks into manageable parts with clear deadlines.
  • Prioritize Self-Care: Ensure you get enough sleep, eat well, and exercise regularly.
  • Incorporate Regular Breaks: Schedule breaks throughout your workday to protect your well-being.

At WebChick.com, we believe in fostering a healthy work environment that encourages creativity and well-being. By taking regular breaks and prioritizing self-care, we not only improve our mental health but also enhance our ability to deliver outstanding designs for our clients.

Remember, your creativity is your most valuable asset. Take care of it by taking care of yourself!

Google Maps Reviews

Hey there! If you're a business owner looking to boost your visibility on Google Maps, getting more customer reviews is key. But what if your customers don't have a Gmail address? No worries! Here's a step-by-step guide to help you gather those valuable reviews.

Step 1: Verify Your Business Profile

First things first, make sure your Business Profile is verified on Google. This ensures your business information shows up on Google Maps, Search, and other Google services. It’s a simple process that adds credibility and helps potential customers find you.

Step 2: Create and Share a Review Link

Make it easy for your customers to leave reviews by providing them with a direct link. A Google Review Link Generator can create a direct link to the review section of your Google Business Profile listing. This makes it simpler for customers to share their experiences.

Step 3: Remind Customers to Leave Reviews

Don't be shy about asking your customers to leave reviews. Let them know it's quick and easy. You can remind them in person, through email, or via SMS. A simple request can go a long way.

Step 4: Integrate Reviews into Your Website

Add a Google review page on your website and display your existing reviews. This not only showcases your positive feedback but also encourages new customers to leave their own reviews.

Step 5: Promote Reviews on Social Media

Share your Google reviews on your social media platforms. This helps spread the word and encourages others to leave their feedback as well.

Step 6: Use a Review Widget

Include a Google review widget in your website's footer. This makes it easy for visitors to see and add reviews directly from your site.

Step 7: Engage with On-Site Customers

If you have a physical location, engage with customers on-site. A friendly reminder to leave a review can be very effective.

Step 8: Respond to Existing Reviews

Show your customers you value their feedback by responding to existing reviews. This not only builds trust but also encourages others to share their experiences.

Step 9: Leverage Surveys

Start with a survey to gather initial feedback, then follow up with a request for a Google review. This two-step approach can increase the likelihood of getting more reviews.

Step 10: Add Review Links to Communications

Include a Google review link in your email signature and any other customer communications. This provides a constant reminder and easy access for customers to leave reviews.

Special Note from WebChick.com

At WebChick.com, we are truly grateful for all the wonderful reviews we've received on Google Maps and UpCity. Your feedback helps us improve and continue delivering exceptional service. Check out our reviews here and here.

Creating a Google Account with a Non-Gmail Address

For customers without a Gmail address, they can still leave a review by creating a Google Account using their existing email. This allows them to sign in, leave reviews, and receive notifications without needing a Gmail address.

Wrap-Up

Getting more Google Maps reviews doesn’t have to be a challenge. By following these steps, you can encourage more customers to share their positive experiences, even if they don’t have a Gmail address. Remember, every review helps your business grow and reach more potential customers.

QR CODE SCAMS

In today's digital age, technology has become an integral part of our everyday lives. From contactless payments to online shopping, we've come a long way in simplifying transactions and information sharing. One such technology that has seen a significant rise in adoption is the Quick Response (QR) code. However, with its rise in popularity, QR codes have also become a new avenue for cybercriminals. Let’s delve deeper into the world of QR code scams.

What is a QR Code?

A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode that can be scanned using a smartphone camera or a dedicated reader. It quickly provides access to information, be it a website link, a payment gateway, or a simple text message. It has become increasingly popular due to its convenience, especially in sectors like retail, marketing, and events.

The Rise of QR Code Scams

While QR codes were designed to make our lives easier, they have also become an attractive tool for scammers. Here's how they exploit this technology:

  • Malicious Websites: By encoding a link to a phishing website within a QR code, scammers can trick users into providing personal information, from login credentials to credit card details.
  • Download Harmful Apps: Some QR codes can prompt users to download applications that contain malware or spyware.
  • Fake Payment Gateways: Scammers can create QR codes that redirect users to fake payment pages, leading to unauthorized transactions.

Spotting and Avoiding QR Code Scams

  • Source Verification: Always ensure the QR code you're about to scan is from a trustworthy source. Be wary of codes in public places that seem out of context or stuck over original ones.
  • Use a Secure QR Code Scanner: Some dedicated QR code scanning apps offer security features that can detect malicious URLs. It's always a good idea to use these rather than generic scanning apps.
  • Check the URL: Before taking any action, always check the URL you’re redirected to after scanning. Ensure it begins with 'https://' and looks legitimate.
  • Avoid Downloading Unknown Apps: If a QR code prompts you to download an app, be extra cautious. Check the app's reviews and verify its legitimacy through other means before downloading.
  • Use Mobile Security Software: Employ comprehensive mobile security software that can help detect and prevent threats from malicious QR codes.

As QR codes continue to gain prominence in various sectors, understanding potential threats and practicing caution can ensure a safer digital experience. Always remain vigilant and keep your devices protected. By staying informed and cautious, we can enjoy the conveniences of QR codes without falling prey to scams.

shop, mobile phone

Homeownership brings many joys, but it also comes with responsibilities - one of which is ensuring that our homes are protected with the right insurance. Over the years, I, like many, have come to accept my insurance premium as just another bill to be paid. That was until a recent surprise on my premium notification left me questioning the value I was getting.

Out of the blue, I received a notice of an increase in my home insurance rate. Initially dismayed, I decided it was time to see if the grass was greener on the other side. With a cup of coffee in hand, I took to the web, intent on finding a better deal.

Now, here's where things got interesting.

Before I could even finalize a decision, my current insurance agent rang me up. To my astonishment, he offered to lower my home insurance rate. And not just by a little – my premium was now significantly cheaper. How did they know I was considering a switch? It was an uncanny coincidence, or so it seemed.

This experience left me with a valuable realization: It pays to shop around. Even if you don’t end up switching, the mere act of searching might prompt your current provider to offer you a better deal. Especially if you’ve been a loyal customer for years, no company would want to lose your business without a fight.

On my quest for more information about home insurance, I discovered something about the industry that many may not be aware of. Insurance companies use a database called LexisNexis C.L.U.E. (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) to guide their pricing and underwriting decisions. It collects and reports up to seven years of auto and personal property claims and provides insurance risk scores.

Home insurance rates can be influenced by a variety of factors:The estimated replacement cost of your home
  • Specific risks associated with your home or its location
  • Personal characteristics and history as a homeowner
  • Your claims record
  • The level of coverage you select for your policy

Different insurance companies use varying underwriting methods and might provide different quotes for seemingly similar policies. Therefore, it's always a wise decision to compare quotes from multiple providers before making a choice.

To all homeowners out there: Your loyalty is valuable. Make sure your insurance provider knows that.

rioritizing Accessibility Every Step of the Way

At WebChick.com, our daily mission as web designers revolves around crafting digital spaces that everyone can navigate with ease. While many companies ensure their brick-and-mortar establishments are ADA-compliant, they often neglect their online presence.

What many don’t realize is that the ADA extends beyond physical accessibility, like ramps and parking spots. It encompasses digital terrain too. The alarming surge in ADA compliance lawsuits online is evidence that many businesses miss this crucial point.

Did you know that, according to a WebAIM study, the top 1 million websites had an average of 50 accessibility issues? These errors hint at a wider challenge in the digital sphere, even though some sectors, such as government, are making commendable strides.

Through my extensive experience at WebChick.com, I've seen it all. From websites crafted by DIY enthusiasts to those created by agencies unaware of accessibility nuances, many sites have underlying issues that may not be apparent to the untrained eye.

The Digital Door Should Be Open to All

Every time a website isn't ADA-compliant, it's not just a potential legal pitfall; it’s a missed opportunity to engage a larger audience. Beyond potential legal battles and financial repercussions, businesses also risk damaging their reputation and hindering growth. In today's competitive online marketplace, an inclusive approach isn't just right—it's essential for survival.

Navigating the complexities of web accessibility at WebChick.com, we often encounter hurdles like missing image descriptions, clashing colors, inaccessible online forms, and video content without captions. For clarity, let's dive into the guiding pillars of web accessibility, termed as POUR:

  • Perceivable: Ensure that all content is presented in a manner that's comprehensible to everyone, such as providing text alternatives for visuals.
  • Operable: The website should be user-friendly, accommodating various navigation methods from keyboards to assistive tools.
  • Understandable: An intuitive design is paramount. Navigation should be consistent, and content should be logically organized.
  • Robust: A forward-looking approach ensures that web content remains accessible across diverse platforms and as technology evolves.

How ADA-Compliant is Your Digital Space?

Keen to gauge your site's ADA standing? Initiating an accessibility audit is the way to go. Tools like wave.webaim.org can help you identify gaps. It's worth noting that ADA compliance isn’t a one-time task; it demands ongoing diligence.

The Bigger Picture of ADA Compliance

An ADA-friendly website isn’t just about legalities. It's about maximizing outreach, enriching user experience, and solidifying your digital brand footprint. With search engines rewarding accessible and high-quality sites, features like succinct image descriptions and smooth navigation can significantly enhance your online visibility, drawing more organic traffic.

In conclusion, at WebChick.com, our ethos underscores that digital inclusivity isn’t just a regulatory mandate; it’s central to optimizing user satisfaction, safeguarding brand integrity, and steering the financial trajectory of any online business.

And with #GivingTuesday just around the corner, there's an even stronger emphasis on sharing and contributing to worthwhile causes. However, as we deck the halls and prepare our gift lists, it's crucial to be aware and vigilant, as not all holiday 'givers' have the best intentions.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is stepping up, keenly aware of the surge in scams that can sometimes shadow this joyful season. From November 27 to December 1, 2023, as part of Charity Fraud Awareness Week, the IRS is reaffirming its commitment to safeguard the integrity of charitable donations and join hands in a global effort to curb charity-related fraud.

At WebChick.com, we're donning our holiday hats and joining in the mission to ensure that your festive generosity reaches the right hands. We believe it's essential to sprinkle a pinch of due diligence amidst our holiday giving. With fake charities having made the IRS's Dirty Dozen tax scams list for 2022, the need for caution is clearer than ever.

Before you wrap up your contribution in a shiny bow, take a moment to use the IRS's Tax Exempt Organization Search. This tool ensures your chosen charity is genuine and truly dedicated to the spirit of giving. Remember, an authentic non-profit will welcome your scrutiny, understanding the importance of a donor's peace of mind.

And a little festive wisdom: if any charity rushes or pressures you during this season of joy and reflection, it's okay to hit the pause button. Recheck, reassess, and then decide.

As we gear up for #GivingTuesday and the broader holiday season, let's channel our generosity in the right direction. By being informed and diligent, we can make sure our festive spirit and goodwill truly count. Happy giving!

Banning Harmful Food Additive ad

In an age where many countries globally prioritize the health and well-being of their citizens by regulating the food industry, the USA seems to be catching up. A new law recently signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) can be seen as a leap towards ensuring safer eating habits for Americans.

On Saturday, Gov. Newsom put pen to paper on a bill that bans the use of four chemicals known to be present in some of America's favorite snacks. These chemicals include red dye No. 3, potassium bromate, brominated vegetable oil, and propylparaben. The implications of this law are far-reaching, with popular snacks like Peeps, Brach’s candy corn, and Little Debbie Cosmic Brownies containing these now-banned substances.

However, a notable misconception surrounds this bill. Some have dubbed it the “Skittles ban,” given an earlier draft of the legislation aimed to ban titanium dioxide, a chemical commonly found in Skittles candy. This specific ingredient, however, did not make the final cut and remains permissible.

This legislative move by California aligns with practices seen in several other countries that prioritize the health implications of food consumption over commercial interests. Studies highlighting the potential dangers of certain food additives have long raised concerns among health advocates and consumers alike. By outlawing these specific chemicals, the state of California is signaling its commitment to its citizens' health.

It's essential to understand why these particular chemicals have come under scrutiny. For instance:

Red dye No. 3: Has been controversial due to potential links to cancer.

Potassium bromate: Classified as a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Brominated vegetable oil (BVO): Its effects on the human body are still under study, but its excessive consumption is linked to negative health outcomes.

Propylparaben: Used as a preservative, there have been concerns about its effects on the body's endocrine system.

Speaking as a MIMI to some wonderful grandkids, this new legislation holds personal importance. The health of our children and future generations is paramount, and it's comforting to know that steps are being taken to ensure they aren't exposed to potentially harmful chemicals in their daily treats.

In conclusion, while some may view this move as restrictive, many see it as a significant stride towards a healthier nation. By placing health over commercial interests, lawmakers are sending a clear message: the well-being of citizens is paramount. As more research continues to shed light on the potential dangers of certain food additives, it's imperative to adjust our dietary standards accordingly. After all, a nation's strength lies in the health of its people, and it's heartening to see steps taken to ensure that.

In the digital realm, trends come and go, but some pillars stand the test of time. One of them is HTML. Even in a landscape replete with sophisticated frameworks and tools, HTML's significance in web design remains undiminished.

HTML, the foundational structure of any webpage, has several advantages. Firstly, it provides unmatched stability. Unlike some of the transient web design tools or platforms that tend to break or become obsolete, HTML has remained consistent. This ensures that websites built today can run smoothly years down the line without any hiccups. Moreover, in terms of security, the simplistic nature of HTML minimizes vulnerabilities, a crucial aspect given today's cyber-threat landscape.

Central Ohio businesses have recognized the need for reliable and steadfast online platforms. And webchick.com, a renowned name in the area, has become the go-to for such robust designs. Using the timeless prowess of HTML, they've delivered websites that aren't just aesthetically pleasing but are fortified strongholds in the digital space.

diaper bank

Bottoms Up Diaper Bank’s 3rd annual World’s Largest Diaper Drive in May collected a record 762,000 packages of diapers. That’s quite a jump from the non-profit organization’s humble start in Lancaster on Tim and Jo Welsh’s 40th wedding anniversary five years ago, when they decided to donate a box of diapers for each year of their marriage and then more than doubled their goal.

For Welsh, with a career in non-profit organizations that focus on single mothers, organizing Bottoms Up later in 2018 was a natural next step. In the five years since then, the organization has expanded beyond Fairfield and Franklin counties to include more than 20 counties (mostly in Central and Southern Ohio, but some in the northwestern part of the state) and six storage sites to serve the regions.

“Diapers are terribly expensive, and the need for them is great,” Welsh said, noting a litany of relevant details:
  • There are 9.6 million single mothers in the U.S. and 2.9 million of them live in poverty.
  • Medicaid covers about 47 percent of all births in the U.S., yet no government program provides diapers as a basic need for babies.
  • One in three American moms have trouble meeting their need for diapers.
  • Child-care facilities and early-childhood-education programs expect parents to provide diapers when their kids attend.

Tim and Jo Welsh stress that the annual diaper drive has three goals: to raise awareness of the need for diaper; to collect as many diapers as they can; and to raise funds. In addition to the 762,000 collected in May, Bottom Up also raised $250,000 for more diapers.

“The drive has increased awareness, but awareness of Bottoms Up is secondary to diaper need,” Tim said.

It even has boosted national awareness: The World’s Largest Diaper Drive expanded last year beyond Bottoms Up – and this year it was joined by diaper banks and other groups in 10 states across the country, from New York and Florida to California and Washington. Plans already are emerging for the 2024 drive.

Bottoms Up operates under a credo often cited by charitable organizations. “We have mentality here,” Tim said, “that if you chase the heart, the money will come; if you chase money, the dollars will flee.” The heart of the fundraising and diaper-collection efforts, he said, is churches.

“The sweet spot for drives is churches and schools,” he said, because such institutions are at the front line of providing services to harried families that may have trouble buying enough diapers. “We’re breeding a whole generation of awareness of diaper need.”

Since 2018, Bottoms Up has delivered more than 3 million diapers to over 70 food pantries and childcare facilities in almost one-quarter, of the state – ensuring that families have access to diapers they need to keep their children clean, dry, and healthy.

On the Bottoms Up website, Jo Welsh is the face of the organization. The website, at https://www.bottomsup.life/, has plenty of information with clickable buttons for those who want to donate diapers, donate money, or hold a diaper drive. The site is designed and donated by Web Chick, who often donates her services to public-service organizations.

Frequently Asked Questions – So you want to be an Ambassador?

The Mighty Hero Homes Foundation, a Georgia-based nonprofit 501(c)3 organization devoted to ensuring permanent homes to the 33,000 unhoused U.S. military veterans, is launching an ambitious campaign to raise $100 million in 100 days as part of the ongoing mission to house veterans.

The goal is to secure $100 donations from 1 million people through a network of Patriots and Ambassadors.

Make a one-time donation of $100 or more and you become a Patriot. A Patriot who commits to enlisting at least 10 other donors at the level becomes an Ambassador.

Mighty Hero Homes was founded in 2018 in McDonough, Georgia, and envisions a national network of 450 veteran communities that have many on-site amenities and services, with connections to and support from off-site organizations. Each community is a “base,” with clusters of living quarters serving individuals, families, and ADA-compliant units for people with disabilities. Each base also has a commissary, activity centers, and the capacity to serve residents as they age.

Mighty Hero Homes is the first non-government organization dedicated exclusively to providing scalable, permanent housing for all homeless veterans. Founder Drew Walston has been an athlete, executive and developer, and has long been concerned about veterans and homelessness. He has assembled of team, many of them veterans, with expertise in development, chaplaincy, and other specialties.

Its model is to have local businesses, churches, and other civic organizations sponsor each base resident, and provide van service to transport residents to off-base activities. Through these links with the broader community, residents can establish relationships and become a real part of the community through invitations to houses of worship, local events, meals, and other activities.

Raising $100 million qualifies Mighty Hero Homes to employ several strategies to expand and multiply the capital raised through matching programs, “Last Mile” grants, and other financial instruments. These programs provide Mighty Hero Homes the opportunity to raise up to $1.2 billion through various phases of the OPERATION Because They Deserve Better campaign, underwriting construction of up to 80 Bases and permanently housing up to 6,720 homeless veterans in planned communities with a full array of on-Base amenities and wraparound services.

More information about the campaign and becoming an ambassador is available here. Renderings of the planned bases and specially designed homes where veterans will live are available here: Our Story, Our Promise

John Augustine
last year’s winner, John Augustine

The Lancaster-Fairfield County Charity Newsies are doing it again! The historic local charity will sell $20 tickets for a brand-new car for the second year in a row.

The winner will be announced December 7 as part of the group’s annual auction and premier fundraiser. The prize is a choice of a 2024 Kia Seltos LX from Coughlin of Lancaster or $15,000 in cash. (The holder of the winning ticket must be 18 years old by the time of the drawing, and Ohio law makes winners responsible for taxes and fees on the prize.)

Charity Newsies, a nearly century-old civic institution, is starting its busy season of preparation for the giving season. Its annual school clothing drive in July 29. And during the week of August 7, the Newsies will have their annual packing and delivery of school supplies for children in families in need of assistance.

In addition, the Newsies’ annual Ladies Golf Outing is August 6 Valley View Golf Club. The Mens Golf Outing is September 8 at Lancaster Golf Club. These lead up to the December 7 banquet and the 87th annual Charity Newsies “paper drive” and Christmastime giving.

The auction and banquet fundraiser (and raffle drawing) on December 7 is followed by the signature “Paper Drive” fundraiser on December 9. Echoing streetcorner newsboys who hawked newspapers in days of yore, the newsies’ most visible fundraiser is “selling” special Eagle-Gazette issues the second Saturday of every December and collecting money for Christmas Eve delivery of holiday food boxes.

The holiday deliveries aid 500 or more families in the county with food, while other events provide over 800 children with schools supplies and clothing in times of need. The money and donations come not just from those who buy papers from the Newsies, but also from local businesses that donate food, clothing and dollars – and cars – to the Newsies’ cause.

Newsies volunteers will pack food boxes on December 22 and deliver them December 23.

professional resume writers

Deshawn Toney turns lights on for people.

Over the past few decades Deshawn has worked with several organizations throughout Central Ohio, spending much of her career in non-profit offering direct service to clients.  The common thread in her career has been helping people of greater barriers and lesser means find their way in the working world, and often finding themselves in the process.

Deshawn has been Fairfield County’s Deputy Director of Economic and Workforce Development for almost a year, with a focus on the Fairfield County Workforce Center. But on her own time, she has started multiple business ventures including Golden Flower Resumes.

Before starting with the county, Deshawn worked with Godman Guild, one of the few remaining settlement houses, serving mostly low-income families and job seekers near The Ohio State University.  As Deshawn built up her own résumé in the workforce-development field, she found herself becoming a specialist in writing résumés for others. Her expertise has lent itself to numerous organizations and community members. Earning her certification as a Professional Résumé Writer from PACCRW, Deshawn found her niche providing services to non-traditional workers who have never had a résumé or formal job description, much less a “career path”.

Deshawn met some of her most memorable clients while teaching Adult Basic Education and work readiness training. These are the people who smile when she switches on a metaphorical light bulb above their heads. “They have skills they didn’t realize,” Deshawn says, noting a lot of people in workforce training “do hair on the side, cook dinners, babysit, do nails, or cleaning. They’re usually in survival mode – just doing work to pay the bills. They don’t see themselves as having a profession.”

But the truth comes out when she asks them questions to develop a résumé. “I ask them, ‘How do you know what to charge? ‘How do you get clients?’ Then they realize they’re actually running a business for themselves.” Deshawn believes this knowledge breeds confidence in their abilities helping them to recognize new skills. “What I really enjoy in working with people on resumes is seeing them when their résumé is completed – they’re surprised how many things they can do,” she said.

A good résumé should reflect not just an applicant, but a person -- with experiences, tribulations, and aspirations. That applies to the people she’s worked with in the job-training world, as well as people already on a career path. “Résumé writing should be person-centered – you have to get to know the person, what they’re passionate about, and what kind of environment they want to work in and thrive in. Your résumé doesn’t show up at the job – you do,” she says.

Customized Resume ad

When asked about one of her more memorable clients, Deshawn reflected back on one client a few years ago who spoke both English and Spanish, but never considered being an interpreter, never saw her knowledge as a marketable skill. She worked with her boyfriend cleaning houses. This was a business they ran independently, but only did it to pay bills. After having an in-depth conversation about her skills and receiving her newly crafted résumé, the client returned a few weeks later and informed Deshawn that she had just been hired as an interpreter. Looking to extend her client base, Deshawn continues to offer personalized résumé writing services that help people develop confidence in the way they see themselves and their skills.

Deshawn Toney has fourteen years of experience in Workforce Development and résumé writing. She holds a master’s degree in Adult Education and Training; Certified Professional Résumé Writer; Certified Employment Support Professional.

Web Chick recently updated the website for Golden Flower Resumes and is excited to support Deshawn’s personalized approach to résumé writing.

Unleashing the Power of PDFs for Enhanced Web Experiences

When Adobe introduced Portable Document Formats (PDFs) in 1993, they revolutionized document sharing, eliminating formatting and font compatibility issues across devices. However, as we navigate the ever-evolving digital landscape, it's crucial to optimize the usage of PDFs to ensure better accessibility and usability when presented on web pages.

Addressing PDF Challenges on the Web:

PDFs were originally designed for printed materials, which can create inherent obstacles when used on web platforms instead of HTML. These challenges include the need for proper tagging and interpretation to ensure compatibility with screen readers, demanding extra attention to meet accessibility standards. Additionally, requiring specific software to open PDFs adds an extra step for users, which can be slow and inconvenient. Moreover, with the surge in mobile browsing, PDFs may not deliver seamless experiences on smartphones, potentially hindering accessibility. Broken links within PDFs can also degrade user experience and negatively impact the overall usability and search engine optimization (SEO) of web content.

Best Practices for Optimizing PDFs:

  1. Explore Alternative Presentation Formats: Consider alternative formats such as HTML pages, calendar tools, people listings, or other suitable digital mediums to present textual content effectively.
  2. Optimize PDF Usage: Utilize PDFs as secondary formats, making them available for download and printing, while encouraging primary content presentation on the web. Whenever possible, replace visual elements that solely rely on PDFs with image files.
  3. Ensure Accessibility of Updated Documents: Departments responsible for maintaining policies and frequently updated documents should prioritize accessibility. Focus on ensuring document accessibility without relying on specific platforms mentioned previously.
  4. Embrace a Web-Centric Approach: Adopt a web-first mindset, prioritizing the primary entry point of web pages for a seamless user experience. By reducing dependence on PDFs, we can minimize potential errors, resulting in a more efficient and user-friendly digital environment.

By implementing these best practices, we can unlock the true potential of PDFs on the web, promoting enhanced accessibility and usability. Together, let's create a more inclusive and user-centric online experience.

The connection that Annie Roth found on a serendipitous cross-country flight two years ago is the kind of camaraderie and support she hopes to foster among people anywhere suffering from emotionally abusive relationships.

She’s off to a good start, with 328 current members of Find Your Voice Now some frequently attending free support-group sessions on Zoom every other week – joining in from the Cleveland area, nationally, and from as far away as Mexico, Canada, Israel, and Australia. She envisions such chapters of Find Your Voice Now being hosted in cities across the country and around the world.

“This is so prevalent in so many people’s lives,” Roth said of the many forms of emotional abuse – not just in marriage and other romantic relationships. “If an employee is being harassed by a manager, that is not acceptable.” Other examples of emotional abuse include daughters seeking independence from domineering mothers, and relationships among co-workers, siblings, friends, partners.

On a flight to Seattle two years ago, Roth’s seatmate was a woman with whom she had similar experiences with a stressful previous relationship. They shared ideas about what would have been helpful when they were going thought their hardships – and at the top of their list was a women’s support group to help them navigate their challenges. By coincidence, they shared the same flight back to the Midwest. Further conversation led to creation of Find Your Voice Now.

The key, they agreed, was finding your own voice after being deprived of an identity. “We can’t control others’ behavior, but we can control our response in how we deal with it,” Roth said.

For 17 years – long before Find Your Voice Now – Roth has been a certified wellness coach. Even though the support group will always be free, and available to every woman in need, she also deals with toxic relationships and lifestyle changes in her private practice, Functional Wellness Inside and Out.

free sessions for women

Find Your Voice Now got started amid the COVID pandemic, and meetings were virtual. As COVID waned, meetings continued on Zoom because it works well for participants. Meetings typically have 15 to 20 people. Roth said sessions include long-timers, as well as those who come in a few times. Others come back for periodic support.

“I have regulars – I like that community feeling,” she said. “But it’s always a success when I have one or two new people. There’s a loose agenda. After introductions, I ask if anyone has anything pending – affecting that person at that moment, or someone who needs some help right now. These women communicate – they share stories they wouldn’t share anywhere else. That’s the safe space we want to provide. It's support when you need it – we will work on your timeframe.”

Roth added that the openness of the sessions has been “immensely rewarding” for her as well as helpful to participants. The meetings are never recorded, “so everyone is protected and comfortable.”

She also emphasizes that support is different than therapy. Therapy is a vertical relationship with a therapist assessing and working one-on-one with an individual or couple. “Group support,” she said. “is horizontal. We’re all equal, and there is no judgment; we’re on the same plan and are all there to hear, share, comfort, and help each other heal.”

“Humans are not naturally healthy alone,” Roth said. “We are social people. We need to meet other people, to find and discover other things. And we don’t need to face our problems alone.”

Visit our website to learn more and join Find Your Voice Now [https://findyourvoicenow.today/]. Together, we can overcome the impact of emotional abuse and empower one another to live our best lives.
